How to Choose a Course
Nationally available evidence based leadership courses for individuals working with or aspiring to work with the older adult population. The following senior fitness specialist programs promote accountable and effective functional mobility opportunities in programs for various settings such as community centres and long term care facilities.
Post Rehab Exercise for Stroke (PRES): This one day workshop will instruct guidelines for fitness and mobility community based group exercise programs for stroke survivors. Learn assessment tools to measure specific functional gains of stroke participants as well as a variety of exercises with progressions that are suitable for this population. One of the following courses is highly recommended to be completed before taking this course: RCET, FFOA, FF ADP, SFIC
Balls Workshop (Balls): This is a 2 hour very practical and hands on workshop. You will learn to include small exercise balls in your functional mobility programs for both high functioning and lower functioning lower adults. Based on a progressive series of exercises and postures that focus on the core and sitting balance. Learn stabilizing techniques to improve overall strength, balance and flexibility.
Functional Activity Measures Workshop (FAM): This workshop will focus on measuring functional abilities of older adults and the special needs and considerations of this population. Participants will gain skills and knowledge in conducting functional fitness assessments for older adult fitness parameters. Over 17 different assessments will be covered in this session.
Functional Fitness for Falls Prevention (FFFP): A workshop designed for retirement living staff to learn to provide safe exercise programming. Topics covered are: safety, managing risks, gait & fall risk assessment, exercise guidelines, specific exercise suggestions and falls prevention exercise program planning.
Balls, Bands & Balance Workshop (BBB): Half Day workshops focusing on small ball, balancing, strengthening & stretching exercises for clients with a variety of functional levels. This is a very practical and hands on workshop. You will learn how to incorporate small balls and resistance bands into your fitness programs. Bands have been shown to improve muscular strength and endurance which promote functional independence.
Functional Fitness for Older Adults (FFOA & FT) Workshop: Designed for staff working in long-term care facilities, retirement residences and adult day programs who want to learn how to instruct appropriate physical activity programs for residents/clients; emphasis is on maintaining or improving balance, leg and arm strength and mobility of the frail older adult. Fast Track available for staff with significant experience in a long term care setting.
Restorative Care Education and Training Course (RCET & FT): Designed for staff and those interested in working in long-term care facilities who want to learn how to develop an effective and beneficial restorative aide program with an emphasis on mobility, transfers, eating, and communication. This 4 day workshop is evidence based and focuses on new ACTIVE guidelines for care facilities. Fast Track available for staff with significant experience in a long term care setting.
Restorative Care Refresher (RC Refresher): This 6 hour refresher workshop is geared to past Restorative Care participants and anyone interested in the implementation of evidence based Restorative Care Programming in Care facilities. Topics covered: falls prevention programming,
hands on practical exercise programming, sample programming for Stroke, follow through programming strategies, outcome based programming strategies, gait aid retraining programming options & wheelchair mobility programming.
Seniors Fitness Instructor Course (SFIC & FT): The SFIC was developed to address a need for training and information about appropriate physical activity programs for older adults. It is a certification program for anyone (older adults, young adults and volunteers) who want to learn how to design and lead effective fitness classes for the community dwelling well older adult. Additional steps are taken following the course to complete the certification standard. Fast Track available for those with a fitness background.
Seniors Fitness Instructor Course Refresher (SFIC Refresher): Three or more hour workshops covering updates for certified fitness instructors, review of SFIC information, question and answer opportunities for trained fitness leaders. Offered by Seniors’ Fitness Instructor Course Trainers throughout the country.
Get Fit for Active Living (GFAL): Get Fit for Active Living is an eight week education and exercise program designed to introduce older adults to the benefits of exercise and an active lifestyle. The program consists of two aerobic exercise classes, one weight-training class and a one-hour education class each week. This program is taught by a Get Fit for Active Living Facilitator.
Get Fit for Active Living Facilitator (GFAL-F): The 8-hour facilitator training prepares SFIC Certified Instructors or equivalent to deliver the Get Fit for Active Living 8 week workshop to older adults in community centres, fitness clubs or anywhere there is access to resistance training equipment and space for the fitness class and theory session.
Home Support Exercise Program (HSEP): An evidence-based in-home exercise program consisting of 10 simple, yet progressive exercises designed to enhance and maintain functional fitness, mobility, balance and independence. This 4-hour workshop is designed for front-line service providers, caregivers and family members in a position to help the frail, homebound older adult.
Home Support Exercise Program (HSEP-F): The 8-hour facilitator training prepares educators, managers or supervisors to deliver the HSEP workshop. An evidence-based in-home exercise program consisting of 10 simple, yet progressive exercises designed to enhance and maintain functional fitness, mobility, balance and independence.
Home Support Exercise Program Booster Session (HSEP Booster): Taught by HSEP Facilitators to already HSEP trained frontline staff, care givers and family members who have not been offering the HSEP Program to a frail older adult in over a year. This session enhances their skills & knowledge of this unique program.
Home Support Exercise Program Facilitator Take Home Reinstatement Assignment (THR Assignment): Offered to Home Support Exercise Program Facilitators who did not renew their facilitator status. This assignment covers the essential topics and skills to renew their status.
Functional Fitness for Adult Day Programs (FFADP): Developed for adult day centre staff. This course focuses on exercise design and delivery of safe & effective exercise programs for their clients. Those who are already leading exercise programs will learn important exercise principles and techniques for incorporating them, as well as exercises that improve strength, balance, flexibility and posture.
